Summer Learning Loss refers to the loss in academic skills and knowledge over the course of summer months. Children from under-resourced communities lose an average of 2.5 months of reading and math skills over the summer.

Through a partnership with BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), the Commonwealth of Virginia, and participating school systems, YMCAs in Virginia provide a summer learning opportunity with swimming, enrichment and learning all built into each day. Certified teachers lead reading and math instruction each morning. The afternoon enrichment activities include arts & crafts, visits to local parks, trips to the library, swim lessons and more.

In 2018, children participating in Virginia Power Scholars Academies saw a 1.5 month gain in reading and math over the summer.
